Q: Do I need to seal the wood?

A: Pressure-treated wood is designed to handle moisture on its own, so sealing isn’t required. It generally performs best when it can naturally dry and breathe rather than trapping moisture inside.

Q: Will the wood crack, shrink, or expand over time?

A: Yes — because wood is a natural material used outdoors, some shrinking, expanding, cracking, warping, or small gaps may occur over time due to changes in temperature and moisture. These natural changes are common in outdoor wood products and are considered normal cosmetic aging rather than defects. They typically do not affect the overall durability or functionality of the mud kitchen.

Q: How long will the mud kitchen last outdoors?

A: Our mud kitchens are built using durable outdoor-rated materials, including pressure-treated wood designed to withstand outdoor conditions. With normal use and basic maintenance, they are made to last for many years outdoors. As with any natural wood product, weather exposure over time may cause cosmetic changes such as fading, discoloration, shrinking, or surface wear, but these are normal and do not affect overall functionality.

Q: Is assembly required?

A: Most mud kitchens come fully assembled. Depending on the design and pickup/delivery method, some customers may need to attach small items such as sinks or water spigots at home using a basic Phillips head screwdriver. Kitchens with removable roofs typically require the most at-home assembly and may need a 3/4" socket wrench for final attachment.

Q: How heavy is the mud kitchen?

A: We estimate the weight to range from approximately 45–80 lbs depending on the size and design. We always recommend at least two adults when carrying or repositioning the mud kitchen.

Q: Will the wood discolor or weather naturally over time?

A: Yes — because wood is a natural material used outdoors, it will naturally weather and change appearance over time. Exposure to sun, rain, and seasonal conditions may cause fading, discoloration, grain raising, or a natural gray patina. These changes are normal and do not affect the overall function or durability of the mud kitchen.

Q: Is the mud kitchen splinter-safe/sanded?

A: Yes — The kitchens are built with normal play use and safety in mind, though individual parent comfort levels and standards may vary. If desired, parents are always welcome to do additional sanding or maintenance over time based on their personal preference.

Q: How should it be stored during winter?

A: Our mud kitchens are built for outdoor use and can remain outside year-round. During winter, we recommend keeping the kitchen covered or stored in a sheltered area to help extend its lifespan and appearance. Although not necessary, as with any outdoor wood product, exposure to changing weather conditions may naturally cause some expansion, shrinking, or weathering over time.

Q: The roof has started to slant, how do I fix this?

A: Wood is a natural material, so it will naturally expand and contract with changes in temperature and moisture throughout the seasons. The roofs are secured with two bolts on each side that will require tightening over time.

Q: Is pressure treated wood safe?

A: Today’s pressure-treated lumber typically uses copper-based preservatives that are approved for residential outdoor use. These newer treatments are designed to protect the wood from rot and insects while meeting current safety standards. For our mud kitchens, the surfaces are designed for indirect contact during play, not for food preparation or chewing/eating directly off the wood. As with any outdoor play equipment, we recommend normal supervision and regular cleaning.
